Hi everyone,

I'm doing a layout in Create for work. The background is a basketball that I imported into iMaginator and used a zoom effect (and a few others) that came out very well. The foreground is some regular graphics and text.

When I use the Image Well to save the document, the resulting page size is huge, and my document is small, due to the size of the basketball. However, if I use Save As, it comes out the right size.

My other question is when I use Save As, the pdf file is A OK (at some 5 MB), but when I make a TIFF file that way, it comes out at some 600 KB. The page size is fine, but how on earth did I get a TIFF file that's half the size of a floppy disk, but a PDF that is over 5 MB? My prefs say to save the images in a TIFF at 300 dpi, so I'm not sure what's going on here.

I know this might be the most obvious question in the world, but how do I use the Image Well and the Save As command to correctly save this file? I've not run into this before, so I am sure I'm doing something wrong, and any help would be most appreciated.

I've saved a version of the document in my public iDisk folder. My iDisk name is russconte, and the document is called flyer.cre8. Some of the customer info has been removed until we can go public with this, but the issue is the same with or without the exact customer logo

Heh. That was fun. I just tried this on my system. First, I dumped a PDF using the image well, which is 5.7 MB as expected.

Then I tried dumping a TIFF, and Create crashed (log attached).

An image was missing from the document, I can't remember the name of it now, but something from your desktop. The basketball background was in there intact, though.

Okay, I just did it again, and this time it worked.

First, I had the dpi set to 72, and I used File > Export and got a 600 KB TIFF which was 72 dpi as promised.

I changed my TIFF resolution to 300 in the image preferences, did the same thing, and got a TIFF that was 8.2 MB. So that actually worked. Try Export and that should do the trick.

The image well definitely respects the DPI - I'll have to double-check to see if the Export, As TIFF, does...

OK, I have a related question. I see this is an old thread but it pertains to this export issue.

If this is true and the image well respects the DPI, then how come when I try to export my page (custom size 14 in x 14 in @300dpi) and I drag out a PNG file, all I get is a graphic of just the items in the document and it's at 72 DPI?

I would expect that when I drag out an image from the image well, it would give me exactly what I see. A document that is full size (custom size 14 in x 14 in @300dpi).

Any help would be appreciated.

Use TIFF format for the high resolution you set in Preferences (then you could drag that out as PNG and it might be high-res).

I'm not quite what you mean Andrew. It might be hi-res? Shouldn't it be the exact res I have set? I have TIFF settings to 24 (include alpha channel checked) and DPI is set to 300 DPI in Preferences.

My document is set to the custom size I mentioned in the earlier post (custom size 14 in x 14 in @300dpi) .

When I drag from the image well as PNG, shouldn't the image I get be 14 in x 14 in @300dpi ??? That's what I would expect. An image exactly to what I see regardless of how the items inside the document are set up (bigger or smaller than the document).

Does Create not auto CROP to the document size? And regardless of that, the PNG still comes out at 72 DPI. IS this a bug?

Only TIFF format exports at the chosen DPI's...

Any chance we could see DPI support for all image formats and support for full document size images in future releases of Create?

If I gave up support for Panther, Jaguar and earlier versions, it would be easy...

You would still have a working version for the earlier versions of OSX it would just not develop anymore.

I think a line has to be drawn somewhere and Create be brought fully up to date.

Seems reasonable. The downloads section of the website has versions of Create that were frozen at different levels as different versions of the OS progressed.

Taking a poll with the user base could also help. How many people who use Create are on Jaguar, Panther, Tiger?

Maybe around the time Leopard is released would be a good time to "cut the cord"?

I use Create in both Jaguar and Panther.

Hope I'm not one of the users cut along with that cord.

which OS X are you running?

My PowerBook (the system I spend the most time on) is running 10.2.8, and my Power Mac is running 10.3.9 (which is the system I tend to do more design related stuff on these days).

The two apps that are almost always open on my systems are TextEdit and Create... even on my older systems (where I'm using Create 10.0 and Create 5.1). Create is just a major part of my work flow.

Yep, Create is the Swiss Army Knife of applications for me. When I set up my SPARCstation 10 that I just got (running OPENSTEP 4.2), the first app on that system was Create 5.2.1.
