When I insert page numbers (Object>New Objects>Page Numbers), I find that I am unable to edit the text field. I want to add preceding and trailing text, such as "–1–" or "page 1". Is there a way to enter these kinds of preferences?

For now, my work-around is to center the page number in the text field (command-shift-bar), and then add text fields surrounding the number, but this is clumsy at best.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

You can only change the starting page number. Would be a good feature!

I'm glad you like the feature request!

And there is loads of room in the Info palette for before and after text. If this was implemented do you think the before number text should be right justified as you enter it ie it moves away from the number on its right to the left as you enter it. Then if you have a space between the before text and the page number it would be visible when the text is entered.

Blond, it sounds like you are really thinking things through. Not being a programmer myself, your suggestion sounds complicated to me. I was thinking the before and after (preceding and trailing) text would simply inherit the same justification as the number.

Another enhancement to the page number feature would be to allow for "mirror" placement on facing pages, so the page number on the left page could be on the left side, and on the right page the number could be on the right side. I guess R/L Master Pages would solve that, but I have not tried it yet.
