0. I GET "PostScript Error: limitcheck" WHEN I CONVERT A FILE ON AN HFS DISK
Be sure to copy your PostScript files to the Mac OS X Server UFS disk before converting them. If you try to convert a .ps file that resides on an HFS disk, you may get the limitcheck bug, or be unable to write to the HFS partition.

1. MY PDFS ONLY CONTAIN BIG UGLY DOTS INSTEAD OF TEXT!
Be sure to install suitable Type 1 fonts, at least there should be a 'Courier' font for pstill to use for its default font. If it does not find it pstill falls back to a very simple 'dot' font.   If possible put at least   Courier, Courier-Bold, Helvetica, Helvetica-Bold, Helvetica-Oblique, Helvetica-BoldOblique,  Times-Roman, Times-Bold, Times-Italic, Times-BoldItalic and Symbol   inside the PSFonts directory

2. CAN I USE TTFS INSTEAD OF TYPE 1 FONTS?
No. PStill has no idea of TrueType fonts and will not use or include them in the PDF. However you may use TTFs with your apps as most printer drivers produce PS where TTFs are auto-converterd to Type 1 or Type 3 on printout. However using real Type 1 PS fonts will usually produce much better visual results and smaller PDF files.

3. I GET POSTSCRIPT ERRORS!
Be sure to only feed PS Level 1 PostScript into pstill. E.g. the newest Adobe Driver can only create Level 2 PostScript and to use a suitable PPD for creation of the PS files. The 'Adobe Acrobat Distiller' PDD does not work here as it forces the driver to create Level 2 code.   For example you can use the Windows 95/98 printer driver set for the printer 'Apple LaserWriter' for black and write output and 'Canon PS-IPU' for color output.

4. THE CREATED PDFS LOOKS UGLY!
Pstill always uses the best representation possible, but if you create your PostScript input files using TrueType fonts or any other bitmap fonts pstill has no way of turning them into vector information and takes them as they are. Recreate your PS files using Type 1 fonts instead.

5. THE PDF OUTPUT IS ROTATED!
Pstill does not look for the %%Feature comments so it may not notice any rotation setting there, use the rotate option (under More Options) to rotate the output.

6. PSTILL EATS MY HARD DRIVE SPACE!
Sometimes PStill needs quite a lot space for its temp file usually located in c:\windows\temp\opstmp.tmp. If it is aborted in its work it may be be able to remove it completly. You can erase it yourself to reclaim the space (or run PStill again to remove to files).   Be sure to convert dvips-created PS file only if you use Type 1 fonts. The use of Type 3 fonts will bloat up the resulting PDF and will need gargantuan temporary space both in memory and swapfile.

7. I CANNOT EASILY USE PStill produced PDF's with pdflatex (from tetex 0.9).     pdflatex will give me the following message: ! LaTeX Error: Cannot determine size of graphic in Figure.pdf (no Bo undingBox). A. pdtlatex does the same as dvips for PS, it outputs a PDF file directly from latex source (however this has some drawbacks as it may not be able convert embedded images like EPS, these must be provided to pdflatex as bitmap or PDF format. We recommend using latex/dvips The PDFs pstill creates have no bounding box as this concept has no representation in PDF (no comments in there, thus not DSC comments like %%BoundingBox). Use dvips together with type 1 fonts (as described on www.this.net/~frank/pstill.html in the Adobe technote) and later distill the entire ps to PDF using PStill.

8. DOES PSTILL USE JPEG COMPRESSION? Will it keep the JPEG compression of
"Pre-compressed" Images?
The anwser is no for the current release (V1.1), PStill does only ZIP (Lossless) Compression at the moment, however it will support JPEG for the output in a next release. "Precompessed" images (DCT streams inside PS) are not handled yet, as PStill does not implement the Level 2 'filter' command (yet). Again PStill will support most filters in an upcoming release.

9. HOW MUCH TO UPGRADE FROM NEXTSTEP VERSION?
See http://www.stone.com/Pricing.html for latest info - but at announce time, it was just $33. Please send you old license string to info@stone.com or include it when you order PStill from the Stone Secure Order Form.

10. I GET "PostScript Error: unrecogized command"
In the current release, not all PostScript Level 2 commands are supported. If possible, choose to export your PS to Level 1, as a workaround. We are committed to high quality software and are constantly working on PStill. Future releases will support the Level 2 commands.
